The Sith navigation tower During the battle that took place on Exegol in 35 ABY, a navigation tower stood just outside the Sith Citadel. This battle involved the Resistance and the Sith Eternal.
This tower's main function was to transmit a navigational beacon. This beacon was crucial for the Final Order's fleet of Xyston-class Star Destroyers to be able to navigate away from Exegol. Unlike Imperial I-class and Imperial II-class Star Destroyers which had their own navigation computers, the Xyston-class ships relied entirely on the signal broadcast by the tower for navigation.
Prior to the Battle of Exegol, the Resistance discovered a critical weakness: the Final Order fleet of the Sith Eternal needed the navigation tower's signal to escape the planet. Consequently, they formulated a plan to neutralize the tower. Upon arriving at Exegol, the Resistance planned to destroy the tower, thereby preventing the Xyston-class Star Destroyers from departing. The strategy involved a ground team under the leadership of General Finn tasked with directly attacking the tower, while an air team commanded by General Poe Dameron would provide aerial defense for the ground team.
The ground forces utilized a transport hauler to reach Exegol. However, upon their arrival, a First Order officer detected the Resistance's intention to target the navigation tower. As a result, Allegiant General Enric Pryde rerouted the tower's navigation signal to his command ship, the Resurgent-class Star Destroyer known as the Steadfast, effectively forcing the Resistance ground team to shift their focus to Pryde's flagship.
