Biography

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

For the Star Wars anthology movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Neal Scanlan served as the head of Creature Effects. Pablo Hidalgo, while writing the reference book Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide, consulted with Scanlan to understand the inspirations behind the characters from the perspective of the crew. Hidalgo's visit to the Rogue One set included an intensive introduction to the film's aliens, courtesy of Scanlan.

Andor television series

B2EMO was designed by Neal Scanlan.

For the television show Andor, Neal Scanlan held the role of Creature and Droid FX Creative Supervisor. His approach to the show was similar to how he would approach a film project. When designing the droid B2EMO, Scanlan and his team decided on a design that was both rectangular and squat. They examined the script to gain an understanding of B2EMO's role and actions within the show. The team also took into account the droid's interaction with its environment, which helped them determine how to convey emotions through subtle gestures, body language, and head movements. Scanlan's creature shop constructed B2EMO entirely from the ground up, meticulously crafting every aspect, including his square shape and red color. The droid was fully practical and operated via remote control, enabling the actors to perform alongside it in scenes. B2EMO was the first droid created by Scanlan's team that exhibited emotionally recognizable actions and possessed the ability to shrink down.
