Netflix is a US-based company that delivers television shows and movies on demand. Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph established it in 1997 in Scotts Valley, California. Initially, Netflix was involved in both selling and renting DVDs through the mail. However, by 2007, they had branched out into streaming media and video on demand. In January of 2019, Netflix made history as the first tech organization to become a member of the Motion Picture Association of America, thus officially transitioning into a film studio.
As part of an arrangement with The Walt Disney Company to act as the only American subscription service for content created by Lucasfilm Ltd. starting in 2016, Netflix released the 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars film on March 7, 2014. They also provided all 121 episodes of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV show, which included the previously unavailable sixth season. These episodes were exclusive to Netflix until they were put on DVD and Blu-ray on November 11, 2014. Both the Clone Wars film and TV series were removed from Netflix on April 7, 2019.
Beginning in 2016 and concluding in 2020, Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, and Solo: A Star Wars Story were available on the platform for a limited duration, usually around a couple of years. This agreement with Disney came to an end in 2019 because of the launch of Disney+, with its Disney-related productions moving exclusively to the service in 2022.
