History

Announcement

Disney+ allows the use of an image of a Star Wars character as their viewer profile (Darth Vader profile pictured).

The initial announcement for Disney+ came in late 2017, outlining plans for both original film and TV productions, along with content from their existing catalog. Bob Iger, Disney's CEO, mentioned that "a few" Star Wars series were among the projects intended for the platform. These included The Mandalorian, a revival season of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars from Cartoon Network, in addition to the prior seasons, and a television series focusing on Cassian Jeron Andor.

Iger stated in May of 2019 that a third live-action show might debut on the service before the anticipated 2023 release of a Star Wars film that had been announced. This film was later revealed to be Obi-Wan Kenobi, which is centered on Obi-Wan Kenobi. One year later, the announcement came that a fourth animated program, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, which focuses on Clone Force 99, would premiere on the service sometime in 2021. Variety reported that all original content on the service was intended to have "broad family appeal."

2019 launch

Within the first year of Disney+, all Star Wars movies were available, and The Mandalorian's first season premiered on the same day that Disney+ was launched. The first season of The Mandalorian came to a close on December 27, 2019.
