Netflix

Netflix, a U.S.-based company, provides television programs and movies on demand. Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph established it in Scotts Valley, California in 1997; initially, Netflix handled both the sale and rental of DVDs via postal service. However, by 2007, the company had branched out to offer streaming media and video on demand services. In January of 2019, Netflix made history as the first tech organization to become a member of the Motion Picture Association of America, thereby formally transitioning into a film production studio.

History

Relationship with Lucasfilm

As part of an arrangement with The Walt Disney Company that made Netflix the sole American subscription service for content created by Lucasfilm Ltd. starting in 2016, Netflix released the 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars film, as well as all 121 episodes of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV show, including the previously unavailable sixth season, on March 7, 2014. These episodes were exclusive to Netflix until their release on DVD and Blu-ray on November 11, 2014. Both the Clone Wars movie and series were removed from Netflix on April 7, 2019.

Beginning in 2016 and concluding in 2020, Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, and Solo: A Star Wars Story were available on the platform for a period, generally around two years. This agreement with Disney concluded in 2019 due to the debut of Disney+, and its Disney-related content shifted exclusively to that service in 2022.
