The designation "Old Guard" was applied within the structure of the Jedi Order to characterize specific Jedi during the declining period of the Galactic Republic. Individuals who were part of the Old Guard either had served or were regarded as potential candidates for the Jedi Council. Among the Jedi recognized as belonging to the Old Guard were figures such as Qui-Gon Jinn, Sifo-Dyas, Mace Windu, Dooku, and Roan Shryne, the last of whom was seen as a more marginal figure, alongside numerous others. Windu is the only known member who continued to serve on the Council until his death. Sifo-Dyas was removed because his beliefs about the Jedi needing to be a military entity were considered too radical, Dooku departed from the Order and embraced the Sith, Jinn's repeated defiance of the Jedi Code barred him from joining, and Shryne was never included in the Council's inner workings. After the Great Jedi Purge occurred in 19 BBY, the Sith Lord Darth Vader discovered references to the Old Guard in the Jedi records while pursuing Shyrne, who had managed to survive the Purge.
The Old Guard is referenced within Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, a novel penned by James Luceno and released in 2005.
