Ostfrei existed as a satellite of the planet Genarius, and was considered a moon. Due to its unusual orbit, it spent the majority of its time shrouded in the shadow cast by Genarius, resulting in an extremely dark environment. Furthermore, its dense atmosphere acted as a barrier, blocking most of the limited light it managed to receive from penetrating to the surface. Once suitable for life, the destruction of Oblis had a devastating impact on Ostfrei due to its proximity. The resulting asteroid impacts triggered a series of seismic events, ultimately rendering the moon incapable of supporting life.
Because it possessed few remarkable features, Ostfrei was largely disregarded by the inhabitants of the Cularin system. Occasionally, vessels belonging to the Thaereian Navy could be observed in the vicinity of the moon. The Thaereians had established a clandestine military installation on Ostfrei around 31 BBY; however, observers never witnessed any ships actually landing on the moon's surface.
