Oswaft

The Oswaft were sentient beings, akin to transparent, manta-like entities, dwelling within the ThonBoka nebula situated in the Centrality region.

Biology and appearance

These Oswaft were a unique species, evolving not on a planet's surface, but in the vastness of space. They navigated the cosmos as if it were a boundless ocean. Possessing enormous brains that constituted roughly two-thirds of their overall mass, they effortlessly handled complex tasks such as decoding encrypted Imperial communication codes. Their language was a dense, information-rich form of communication, expressed through the emission of microwaves. Remarkably, Oswaft could traverse hyperspace without the need for a spacecraft.

Young adult Oswaft could span half a kilometer from wingtip to wingtip, while the more venerable Elders reached sizes at least twice as large. Their growth continued throughout their extended lifespans. While the exact duration of an Oswaft's life remained unknown, it was evident that they lived for numerous centuries. They possessed tentacles on their lower surfaces and a pair of sensory projections extending from the front of their bodies. They also had the ability to create objects, such as gemstones, from the elements present in their environment. Naturally transparent, the Oswaft were difficult to spot, but they became opaque upon death.

In terms of appearance, the Oswaft bore resemblance to the neebray manta or a jellyfish.

As an Oswaft aged and gained influence, honorific syllables were appended to their name. The ruling Oswaft Elders possessed names ranging from six to over nineteen syllables in length.

History

Oswaft fighting the Imperial fleet

Characterized by their cautious nature, the Oswaft generally remained within the confines of their nebula. This led to their isolation from the broader galaxy for countless millennia. The exception to this isolation was Lehesu, an associate of Lando Calrissian and Vuffi Raa.

In 3 BBY, Emperor Palpatine, driven by his suspicion of an intelligent alien species with a substantial population and the innate ability to perform hyperspace jumps, attempted to eradicate the Oswaft. To this end, he dispatched an armada of 500 capital ships, commanded by his local ally, the Sorcerer of Tund and Centran Scrivinir Rokur Gepta, to blockade the ThonBoka Nebula.

The Carrack-class light cruisers of the armada were modified to poison the interstellar plankton inhabiting the nebula. Assistance arrived in the form of Lando Calrissian and a mysterious droid species known as the Silentium, who guided the Oswaft in their defense against the Imperial fleet during the Battle of ThonBoka.
