A law enforcement agent, commonly referred to as a police officer, but also known as a peacekeeper, security officer, policeman, peace officer, or by the colloquialism cop, was an individual employed by a law enforcement agency with the responsibility of upholding the law and keeping order.
Individuals serving as police officers were members of a law enforcement agency. Their duties included maintaining public order and enforcing legal statutes. While the majority of these officers were employed by planetary or local governing bodies, some were also employed by galactic governments. Frequently, they were integrated into the local Planetary Security Forces, functioning in both policing and military capacities. The nature of police officers varied greatly, ranging from mere security monitors to extremely oppressive and corrupt agents of the state, depending on the specific customs and laws of the planet they served. However, most fell somewhere in between. They possessed the authority to conduct criminal investigations, apprehend individuals suspected of wrongdoing, make arrests when adequate evidence was present, and employ lethal force for self-defense or the protection of others. Often, officers would begin their careers at the lower ranks, eventually progressing to supervisory or administrative roles. Those with significant experience could also become detectives. Common slang terms used to refer to police officers included "Boys in Blue", "Seccers", and "Cops".
