The President of the Senate, alternatively referred to as the President of the Galactic Senate or the Senatorial Presidency, served as the formal presiding officer of the Galactic Senate. The Supreme Chancellor, who was the elected head of the Galactic Republic, was granted this position.
As the formal leader of the Galactic Senate, the position of President of the Senate was bestowed upon the Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic.
The title President of the Senate was brought back into use, and awarded to the Chief of State of the New Republic to represent their position as leader of the New Republic Senate.
Prior to the release of the prequel trilogy, the designation "President of the Senate" was employed in Star Wars Legends works to indicate the Galactic Republic's head of state. Following the prequel trilogy's introduction of the Supreme Chancellor as the Republic's leader, the term "President of the Senate" underwent a retcon and became recognized as one of the Chancellor's titles. Nevertheless, both The Essential Chronology and The New Essential Chronology have created some uncertainty by identifying the leader of the Senate during Ulic Qel-Droma's trial as President of the Senate. The Databank entry for Ulic Qel-Droma portrays the President as the Supreme Chancellor.
