During the High Republic Era, the designation R-class was a category within stellar classification. These stars were characterized by their high temperatures and an unusual abundance of nitrogen. The introduction of a large quantity of supercooled liquid tibanna to R-class stars resulted in extreme instability. This could trigger a chain reaction, causing the star to almost double its original size and release deadly radiation, posing a threat to any living organisms in close proximity. An R-class star located in the Hetzal system almost underwent this reaction during the Great Hyperspace Disaster; however, the Jedi intervened and successfully averted the catastrophe.
