The RSO, also recognized as the Republic Service Organization, functioned as the military assistance division inside the Grand Army of the Republic throughout the Clone Wars; it provided support to the military.

The primary purpose of the Republic Service Organization, which was mainly composed of women, was to boost morale and offer welfare and recreation services to clone troopers during their time off. They looked after off-duty soldiers at the Republic Service Organization center. The customized artwork found on Republic military ships and vehicles frequently featured RSO members.
It is evident that the Republic Service Organization was modeled after the United Service Organizations. This organization also served as the inspiration for the Imperial Service Organization, a volunteer-based social network established in Phoenix, Arizona in 2007. This network commits to aiding charitable groups like the 501st Legion in their efforts, as well as offering assistance to military personnel stationed far from their homes.
Tom Hodges, a comic artist for Clone Wars, introduced the Republic Service Organization, often shortened to RSO, into the Star Wars mythos. Hodges designed two sets of attire: formal attire for typical RSO functions and a "field uniform".
