Salvage droid holding arm

ITW1 Salvage droid holding arm A cutaway view illustrating a salvage droid holding arm deploying salvage droids. The holding arm, or salvage droid holding arm as it is formally known, was a kind of droid utilizing repulsorlift technology. It was manufactured by Serv-O-Droid, Inc. and saw use during the final decades of the Galactic Republic.

The purpose of the holding arm was to be deployed on Podrace circuits to retrieve wreckage from accident sites. Using three P-100 salvage droids released from its underside, it could transport up to 500 kilograms (equivalent to 1100 pounds) of discarded metal. It also featured an all-directional tracking device to pinpoint emergency signals from racers who were damaged or destroyed.

Once its complement of P-100s were onboard again, the holding arm would head back to the main Podrace arena to unload the parts it had collected. If the owner of the parts didn't claim them within a two-hour window, the parts would be either auctioned off or sold, frequently to Jawas.

Behind the curtain

The book Inside the Worlds of Star Wars: Episode I makes an error by identifying the holding arm as a "P-100 salvage droid."
