The San-Ni staff functioned as a melee weapon favored by martial artists across the galaxy. Jedi Weapon Masters sometimes opted for this weapon as an alternative to the lightsaber. Its construction involved three metal rods linked together by power couplings.
Despite its difficulty to master, the weapon was popular among a select few due to its inconspicuous nature. When not activated, the staff appeared as a baton measuring 50 centimeters. Activation required gripping each half of the baton, twisting, and then pulling them apart. This action caused a 10-centimeter stun prod to extend from each end, and two high-voltage power couplings would emit sparks between the three segments. Once activated, the San-Ni's length tripled to 150 centimeters. The electrical discharge was potent enough to sever limbs and severely burn flesh; even a near miss could inflict severe burns. The wielder, however, appeared to be protected from this effect through the use of miniature heat sinks.
The San-Ni staff provided versatility in combat. A user could defend against lightsaber strikes by parrying with the power couplings, which were resistant to lightsaber damage. Furthermore, a wielder had the option to strike an opponent with the power couplings to deliver non-lethal stunning damage.
Jedi Master Waldan Bridger was known in the Jedi Order for his use of the San-Ni staff. He employed it in a duel against General Grievous during the Battle of Togoria in the Clone Wars. However, the cyborg defeated the Jedi within the first minute of their encounter.
