Sandworm

Sandworms, or sand worms, were uncommon entities that dwelled far below the surface, within their self-made tunnels in the desert terrain of Tatooine. Moving at high speeds beneath the ground, they presented a challenge to subdue in combat, and served as a preferred meal for the Krayt dragon.

Jai Quallo, a Kaleesh beast master belonging to the Dust Vipers gang on Tatooine, possessed a sand worm among his collection of trained animals, which were used to aid him during skirmishes.

Behind the scenes

Ancient Sand Worm in Star Wars: The Old Republic

The sand worm of Tatooine initially appeared as an adversary in the Super Star Wars video game from 1992, and was also showcased in the Super Star Wars Official Game Secrets strategy guide that was published the following year. Represented as an elongated, subterranean snake-like being characterized by its pink dermis and verdant eyes, the sand worm did not receive much additional attention, similar to the majority of original content from that particular game.

The MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic, released in 2011, later included a unique being named "Ancient Sand Worm" located in the Dune Sea region of Tatooine. This Sand Worm is portrayed as a towering, sightless insectoid-looking creature, and actually utilizes the same in-game model as smaller killik larvae. The 2016 expansion Knights of the Eternal Throne gave this iteration of Sand Worms a more prominent role in the "Done and Dusted" uprising, explicitly using the designation "Sand Worm" for these beings, as well as related achievement and in-game housing decoration.
