Shalavaa, a Human male Jedi Knight, served the Jedi Order during the era of the Great Sith War. He existed around that time. As the Padawan of Jedi Master Ortraag, Shalavaa's Jedi training culminated in 4000 BBY, after which he received his initial assignment. He was dispatched to a far-flung agricultural colony to act as a Jedi Protector, but he found the first few weeks to be incredibly monotonous. This changed when Shalavaa began investigating the disappearance of a nerf herder close to a supposedly haunted ravine. While searching for the lost herdsman in the ravine's darkness, he was ambushed by a carnivorous plant that resided there. Shalavaa engaged the plant with his lightsaber and killed it after a swift confrontation. Subsequently, Ortraag arrived, praising his former student and declaring him ready for more significant challenges.
Approximately four thousand years prior to the Battle of Yavin, a Human male Jedi Knight named Shalavaa was active. Initially, Shalavaa was the Padawan under the tutelage of Jedi Master Ortraag, who imparted knowledge of the light side of the Force and the principles of the Jedi Order. In 4000 BBY, Shalavaa concluded his apprenticeship with Ortraag and was granted the rank of Jedi Knight. His inaugural mission involved traveling to a remote colony of fenti bean farms and nerf herders, where he was to serve as a Jedi Protector. After Ortraag left him on the planet aboard his starship, Shalavaa was tasked with resolving local issues.
Shalavaa considered his initial weeks on the colony to be rather dull. He longed for adventure and excitement, but instead, he found himself settling minor disputes between colonists and gathering wandering nerf herds. However, one day, Shalavaa decided to investigate the disappearance of a nerf herder whose nerfs had been discovered near a ravine that the locals believed was haunted, as others had vanished in the area previously. Upon reaching the ravine's entrance, carved into a towering mesa, Shalavaa found no sign of the missing herdsman. He activated his lightsaber to provide light and ventured into the dark ravine, which he noticed was overgrown with vines.
As Shalavaa slowly moved deeper into the ravine, he eventually came across one of the herdsman's boots lying in the undergrowth. Using the Force to magnify his senses, Shalavaa searched for additional clues. With his heightened senses, Shalavaa observed something that made him pause—some of the vines infesting the ravine were thicker than the others and were moving subtly. Realizing that the vines were part of some kind of beast, Shalavaa narrowly avoided a sudden attack from one of its appendages. Several more tentacles lunged at Shalavaa, who fought them off desperately with his lightsaber, eventually cutting through them all. Shalavaa soon located the creature's mouth and killed the beast with a final strike from his lightsaber. At that moment, Ortraag emerged from the ravine's shadows and commended Shalavaa for his efforts. Ortraag informed his student that he was prepared to face greater challenges and confront a more significant evil.
Shalavaa, a Human male with fair skin, brown eyes, and brown hair, had a strong desire for the adventure and excitement he hoped would come with being a Jedi Knight. He was initially anxious and uncertain upon arriving at the colony, as it was his first time serving alone, but these feelings soon gave way to boredom, as he was forced to deal with problems that did not interest him. Shalavaa was quick-witted and also a skilled mediator, as demonstrated by his resolution of several disputes between farmers and herders on the colony. Shalavaa possessed considerable knowledge in the areas of culture, language, and bureaucracy.
Having been trained in the ways of the light side by Master Ortraag, Shalavaa had become quite proficient with a lightsaber by 4000 BBY and could also effectively use a blaster. During his ordeal in the ravine, Shalavaa employed the Force to enhance his senses, an ability he had learned directly from Ortraag. Shalavaa was also skilled in the Force powers of life detection, Force sense, and Control Pain. By 4000 BBY, Shalavaa was capable of operating repulsorcraft, in addition to other technical skills. He was also knowledgeable in droid programming and repair, as well as first aid. Shalavaa, being an agile and athletic young man, possessed a natural talent for bargaining and persuasion.
Peter M. Schweighofer created the character Shalavaa, and Brian Durfee provided the illustrations for the Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game adventure "Jedi Protector," which was published in 1997's Star Wars Galaxy Magazine 13. The story presented three possible outcomes to Shalavaa's encounter with the carnivorous plant, which were dependent on the results of several dice rolls. The scenario presented in this article is based on the most successful and probable outcome. Depending on the dice rolls, Shalavaa might fail to notice the beast until it has already attacked him, forcing him to fight the carnivorous plant while already in its grasp. If Shalavaa still manages to defeat the beast, Ortraag appears and congratulates him, but notes that his skills need improvement. However, if Shalavaa fails, Ortraag will intervene and kill the carnivorous plant himself, afterward expressing disappointment and noting that he was too hasty in sending the Jedi out on his own.
