At some point during the last one hundred years of the New Sith Wars, a civil war broke out within the New Sith, which were a revived Sith Empire belonging to the Sith Order that initially rose to power in 2000 BBY. By the time 1100 BBY arrived, the Sith had been consistently victorious in their battles against both the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order, thus commencing what became known as the Republic Dark Age. Even with their impending victory, the Lords of the Sith, driven by their insatiable hunger for power, could not agree to be led by a single leader, and became entangled in a web of disputes and betrayals, which led to the ultimate fracturing of their empire.
Following this internal conflict, various independent Sith warlords continued their bloody wars across numerous star systems, and together, they maintained a strong presence in the Outer Rim of the galaxy's. However, this relentless aggression from the Sith did not go unchallenged, and it ultimately led to the direct involvement of a Jedi Master by the name of Skere Kaan. In 1010 BBY, Kaan publicly condemned the Republic and the Jedi for their failure to stop the decline of galactic civilization. Abandoning the Jedi Order, Kaan gathered a group of like-minded individuals he called the "Brotherhood", and set out to defeat the remaining Sith forces on his own terms.
Under the guise of restoring the Republic, Kaan and his Brotherhood launched a campaign that lasted months against the dispersed Sith factions. Within a year, the most powerful Sith warlords were either destroyed or forced to surrender, earning Kaan praise from the Jedi Order. Unbeknownst to the Jedi and the Republic, the Jedi Master had been secretly plotting against his former allies the entire time, taking on the title of Dark Lord and uniting the surviving Sith factions under his doctrine of "Rule by the Strong." Putting his plans into action, Kaan organized his twenty thousand followers into a new Sith group known as the Brotherhood of Darkness, thus beginning the final stage of the New Sith Wars.
