The Sith Medallion functioned as an award presented by pupils of the Sith Academy located on Korriban during the time of the Jedi Civil War. These medallions, granted to aspiring Sith hopefuls demonstrating aptitude in the Force or otherwise making a favorable impression on a student, represented initial admittance to the Academy. Nevertheless, to secure full authorization, an aspirant was required to initially get in touch with Yuthura Ban, the Twi'lek apprentice under Uthar Wynn, the Master overseeing the Academy, and persuade her of their suitability for enrollment. Following acceptance, the medallion acted as a permit for re-entry into the Academy after departure.
