Spy 189, also known as Red within the ranks of the Rebellion, functioned as a Proliferan agent dispatched by the Proliferan Empire with the mission of identifying and assessing neighboring galactic powers. Throughout his journey, he amassed considerable knowledge regarding Humans and the inner workings of the Rebellion. Adhering to his directives, he made landfall on the planet Mandrine at the location of a Rebel base; however, the Rebels were overwhelmed, resulting in him being attached to Kelly Vermillion's squad. Eager to expand his understanding, he was presented to Captain Scarlet Bloodhawk by Kelly, who vouched for his combat capabilities.

He was not one to back down from a fight, and would employ combat tactics he had learned during training. Such tactics involved taking cover, sometimes even digging underground due to his species' natural burrowing abilities, and ambushing approaching enemies. It was difficult to discern his emotional state because his species communicated through body language that was translated by an electronic device. Furthermore, his limited grasp of Galactic languages led to occasional misunderstandings, as he frequently interpreted slang expressions literally.

Following his departure from Mandrine alongside Kelly's team, he played a role in their acquisition of the Long Shot within the Kessel spice mines, a vessel subsequently renamed the Menagerie by the group. Eventually, the Rebel Alliance uncovered his clandestine activities as a Proliferan spy, leading to his imprisonment, which was a source of disappointment for Kelly, who had placed trust in Red and believed in his potential for redemption.
