Star Wars: Droids (video game)

Star Wars: Droids, a platformer game, was launched in 1988 for the Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, and ZX Spectrum systems. It was a rather loose adaptation of the animated series Star Wars: Droids.

Summary by the Publisher

The Fromm crew successfully broke free of the maximum-security facility located on the planet Ingo. They then commandeered an A-Wing fighter and made their way back to their original base situated on Auren, Ingo's moon.

As fate would have it, R2-D2 and C-3PO find themselves in close proximity to the Fromms—perhaps a bit too close for their liking. When the droids' escape pod crash-lands on Auren's surface, the Fromms promptly capture the pair and confine them to a cell situated on the lowest floor of the gang's secret headquarters.

R2-D2, utilizing his extending probe arm, is able to break free from their holding cell. Now, with C-3PO leading the way, the two attempt to navigate their way through locked doors and circumvent the dangerous security measures put in place by the Fromms to safeguard their base. Unbeknownst to the droid duo, help is on its way—Jord and Thall, having tracked the crash of the shuttle pod, have arrived on Auren's surface. Safety is within reach for R2-D2 and C-3PO... that is, if they can successfully ascend through the Fromm hideout's eight levels, all while dealing with the ever-present patrolling droids.

How to Play

Reflecting its classic arcade origins, the game features a simple narrative: the droids C-3PO and R2-D2 are trying to escape the Fromm Gang's compound while avoiding enemy droids that are trying to deplete their health and stop them.

Thall Joben and Jord Dusat are only mentioned in the game's ending text. The Fromm Gang's guard droids are shown to be shorter in stature when compared to R2-D2. The various levels include areas such as a prison (the lowest level), a mining area, and a research lab.

Canon Status

The events depicted in Star Wars: Droids were never shown in the animated series and are exclusive to this game.

In the years following the game's release, fans and other sources often referred to it as Droids: Escape from Aaron. However, this title was not used in any official game information or materials released at the time. Furthermore, the name "Aaron" is likely a misspelling of "Auren," the moon referenced on the game's packaging. Later publications within the Legends timeline mistakenly identified Aaron as the planet from which the droids escaped.
