The Clone Wars: Strange Allies is a part of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars set of graphic novellas. While it stands alone as a comic book, it does contain characters from the The Clone Wars: Secret Missions series of books, and its narrative takes place following the events shown in Duel at Shattered Rock. Additionally, it contains The Clone Wars: Opress Unleashed, a segment from the issue that was released for Free Comic Book day.
Due to the large number of Jedi Generals engaged in the Clone Wars, tasks typically given to Knights or Masters are now being handled by Jedi still in training—specifically, Padawan Nuru Kungurama, who is without a master. Joined by his clone trooper squad and a large swoop biker named Gizz, Nuru's assignment starts as a standard protection task, but quickly turns into a mystery involving a massacre, the theft of a space freighter, and the abduction of several orphaned younglings!
Windham's contributions to the Star Wars universe have primarily consisted of freelance writing work, as opposed to his own original story concepts. Consequently, Lucasfilm instructed him to incorporate Savage Opress into the comic book.
