A stingfly was a variety of insect. Thrawn stated that if thousands of stingflies were incited to assault a tusklan simultaneously from every direction, it would result in the death of the creature. Employing stingflies as a hunting strategy required considerable patience and damaged the tusklan's hide, however, the hunter was protected because the tusklan was unaware of the source of the assault.
Within the existing Star Wars canon, the initial reference to Stingflies occurred within the pages of the novel Thrawn, penned by Timothy Zahn and released in 2017. Their initial depiction as Tactica elements was in Zahn's 2021 novel titled Thrawn Ascendancy: Lesser Evil. In the Star Wars Legends timeline, the stingfly was first referenced in Zahn's 1997 book, Specter of the Past.
