Sun shawl
A sun shawl served as a protective piece of clothing, shielding the person wearing it from the effects of sunshine. It is known that at least one sun shawl was constructed from a metal-based substance. In 0 BBY, an elderly Human woman residing on the Outer Rim planet of Tatooine utilized a sun shawl as a defense against the light from the binary stars within the Tatoo system.
Behind the scenes
Principal photography for Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope included the filming of the sun shawl scene on April 4, 1976, in front of a mosque located in Djerba, Tunisia. Despite the scene being omitted from the final theatrical cut, the sun shawl made an appearance in the December 1976 novelization of A New Hope, which was written by Alan Dean Foster as a ghostwriter.
