Unidentified female (Anchorhead)

A female Human dwelled within the settlement known as Anchorhead. This settlement was located on the Outer Rim planet of Tatooine. By the time of the Battle of Yavin, she had aged considerably. To shield herself from the twin suns of the Tatoo system, she donned a metallic sun shawl.

In the latter part of 0 BBY, the woman found herself walking along a quiet, deserted street in Anchorhead. It was then that she was almost struck by Luke Skywalker, who was the nephew of Owen Lars, a local moisture farmer. The farmboy was en route to the Tosche power station in his X-34 landspeeder to tell his friends about a battle he had observed above Tatooine. Surprised, the woman quickly moved to avoid Skywalker and yelled at him, shaking her fist in his direction.

Behind the scenes

In the final script of the 1977 film from the original trilogy, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, the woman was simply credited as "Woman". A Tunisian local portrayed the character, and her scene was shot during principal photography on April 4, 1976, in front of a mosque in Djerba, Tunisia. George Lucas, the director, removed the scene before the film's release. An image of the scene was not released until the 1998 publication of the Star Wars Insider magazine's forty-first issue. The article, "The Evolution of Star Wars: Exploring the Lost Cut," included a still from the scene, elevating the filmed version to G-canon status, the highest canonicity level within the Star Wars Legends continuity.

The old woman in Star Wars 1

Additionally, the woman appeared in three adaptations of A New Hope. Her initial appearance featured a slightly altered line compared to the cut scene, and it was in the December 1976 novelization of A New Hope by Alan Dean Foster. She spoke the same line as in the script in two later sources: the first issue of Marvel Comics' Star Wars series, released on April 12, 1977, and the junior novel A New Hope: The Life of Luke Skywalker, penned by Ryder Windham and released in 2009. Given that the latter two sources utilize the script-accurate line, this article operates under the assumption that the novelization contains an error.
