The Tangrene were a sentient species originating from the planet of Tangrene, a world situated within the Outer Rim Territories. This species fostered a tranquil, nomadic way of life on a world characterized by scarce surface-level flora. Their homeworld was discovered sometime between 5,000 and 3000 BBY, functioning as the final destination for a specific hyperlane. During the reign of the Galactic Empire, the Tangrene were subjected to enslavement, forced to construct a central hub for the Imperial Intelligence Ubiqtorate. After the project's completion, the Imperial Moff overseeing the local Morshdine sector decreed the genocide of the Tangrene to preempt any potential future rebellions.
The sentient species known as the Tangrene were a peaceful people. Their homeworld presented a mountainous landscape, practically devoid of surface vegetation or moisture. Instead, lakes took shape within subsurface caverns, nurturing fungal and vegetative ecosystems. Adapting to this unique environment, the Tangrene evolved into a nomadic society.

The Tangrene people's origins lie on a planet sharing the same designation, located within a region of the Outer Rim Territories first charted during the period spanning from 5,000 to 3000 BBY. The Tangrene system was integrated into the Morshdine sector, serving as the terminal point for a significant hyperlane. During the Clone Wars, a conflict between the central Galactic Republic and the dissenting Confederacy of Independent Systems, the Tangrene world found itself within contested territory.
Under the rule of the Galactic Empire, the Republic's successor, the Tangrene were enslaved. They were forced into constructing a defensive network comprising garrisons and shield generators, ultimately forming a highly fortified Imperial Intelligence Ubiqtorate headquarters. Upon the project's completion, the Imperial Moff of the Morshdine sector decided to eliminate any possibility of rebellion by depopulating the planet. The Tangrene, lacking any means of defense against the Empire's power, suffered a complete massacre of their entire population. Following their extinction, the Tangrene homeworld became the setting for several battles involving various factions within the Galactic Empire and the opposing New Republic.
Eric Trautmann, the author of The Last Command Sourcebook, a supplement for the roleplaying game, conceived the Tangrene. This West End Games product, released in 1994, served as a companion to the Timothy Zahn novel, The Last Command.
