Teleporters, created by the Rakata's Infinite Empire, were machines designed to move beings between locations. Found on the prison planet Belsavis at the Tomb, these devices facilitated swift travel across the world and beyond. Their operation relied on specialized teleportation control hubs. These hubs gave off a unique energy signature, which could be detected and followed.
The Galactic Republic remained unaware of teleportation tech until the Cold War. At that point, Republic scientist Lora proposed that Belsavis's original builders had used a teleportation network for navigation within the massive prison. She charged a Republic spacer with analyzing Rakatan terminals to understand the technology.
During a Belsavis breakout, captive Esh-kha forces seized control, using the teleportation system to move soldiers onto a frigate in orbit. This action drew the attention of the Republic Strategic Information Service. Agent Moritt then enlisted a Republic spacer to stop the Esh-kha from escaping via the technology in Belsavis's lower levels.
RSIS Agent Poz studied the technology and assisted the spacer in using the teleporter to access deeper areas. She speculated that the teleporters might replicate matter, not transmit it, or perhaps function as fixed dimensional pathways. Given the vast possibilities, Poz named them "Instantaneous Travel Device" and tracked the Esh-kha to an ancient vault controlling the teleporter. Subsequently, a Republic strike team, led by Captain Devlin, teleported through the device with the spacer to engage the Esh-kha.
By the Galactic Civil War, teleportation knowledge had largely vanished, with Luke Skywalker considering it mere fiction.
