Terrain-following sensor
A Terrain-following sensor (TFS) represented a specific category of sensor that employed optical, sonic, and radiation-based detection methods. Its purpose was to penetrate obstacles, including thick cloud layers and dense forest foliage, enabling the rapid creation of topographical maps. Integrated with a navigation computer, a TFS facilitated route planning within uncharted and heavily obstructed regions, pinpointing possible dangers and suitable landing sites.
During the Imperial pursuit by TIE Fighters through the Hoth asteroid belt, Han Solo made use of the Millennium Falcon's TFS to avoid capture. Regrettably, the system incorrectly recognized an Exogorth as a large cave where they could hide, an error that almost resulted in their demise.
