The Edge of the Galaxy

The Edge of the Galaxy

Situated within the Outer Rim Territories in the Braxant sector of the galaxy, The Edge of the Galaxy was a star system. As of 4.3 ABY, or the year 4.3 after the Battle of Yavin, it featured a novel resort, which encompassed the Rodon Value Pod Hotel, a Solar Power Plant, a Space Observatory, and an asteroid facility. The Star Tours travel company provided transportation to The Edge of the Galaxy resort via their Family Adventure Package.

Behind the scenes

The Edge of the Galaxy was initially presented in an advertisement on Tourscan at the Star Tours attraction in Tokyo Disneyland, which had its grand opening on July 12, 1989. The StarWars.com Online Companion for The Essential Atlas reference book from 2009 identified the system's location as grid square K-3.

The location and visual elements were recycled from the Brava Centauri closing segment of Horizons, a now-closed Epcot attraction centered on the concept of space colonization. David Jones, a special effects expert from Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, designed, built, and filmed the models for Horizons' concluding three sections. The space sequence benefitted from the expertise of Princeton physicist Gerald K. O'Neill, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory was consulted regarding the process of growing crystals for semiconductors in space. Kenneth A. Larson, a model maker, began crafting all the large components and turnings using a machine lathe; however, the assembly of the Brava Centauri sequence was delayed until neon tubes were ready. By the time the tubes were available, Larson had already transitioned to the Mesa Verde sequence, and Dave Heilman finalized the assembly and detailing.
