Development

Matt Miller, known by the pen name Rusty Miller, who was a student of eleven years at the time, authored The Jedi Master's Quizbook. The book is comprised of 425 trivia questions mainly derived from the motion pictures Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope and Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. Editors at Lucasfilm added additional questions, drawing from works such as The Star Wars Sketchbook, The Star Wars Album, The Wookiee Storybook, Once Upon a Galaxy: A Journal of the Making of The Empire Strikes Back, the fan-club newsletter Bantha Tracks, and a variety of other sources.

Del Rey published the book on October 12, 1982. The first edition was printed in two different bindings: one featuring a black cover with a suggested retail price of US$2.50, and another with a blue cover and a suggested retail price of US$1.95. Artwork by Ralph McQuarrie is featured on the cover of both printings.

Continuity

Within the book, two questions, specifically numbers 37 and 329, contain answers that are not accurate. Question 37 ("How many engines did Princess Leia's ship, the Blockade Runner, have?") incorrectly states the answer as "nine," instead of the correct number, eleven. Similarly, question 329 ("What creature did Ben fend off from Luke in the cantina?") incorrectly identifies the creature as "Snaggletooth," rather than the accurate Ponda Baba.
