During the era of the Clone Wars, an innovative handgun prototype was engineered as a defense against the Jedi killer, a Jedi hunter who journeyed to the Cularin system. Despite this, the weapon was never deployed against the Jedi killer; its eventual location was within the Five Masters Academy, a martial arts school located on the planet Cularin. Soon after the Clone Wars concluded, a shadowy being attacked the Academy, slaughtering both students and instructors. Barnab Chistor, an Academy student who was away when the assault started, observed the attacker fighting the Master in Violet, the sole surviving staff member. He then grabbed the experimental handgun and shot at the being. A rocket launched from the weapon hit the attacker, compelling them to withdraw.
