Unidentified Gibbela fruit tree

The agriworld called Gibbela, a solitary world, served as the habitat for a unique species of tree that bore red, round fruit. The Dazouri, the native sentient inhabitants of Gibbela, cultivated this plant, using tripods fashioned from local resources to support its growth. During an ill-fated colonization effort by the Galactic Empire, some of these plants were unfortunately destroyed. However, following the defeat of the Imperial forces, these damaged plants were subsequently restored.

Biology and appearance

A species of plant with black stems thrived on the planet of Gibbela. These plants possessed the characteristic of climbing nearby structures, a trait that was utilized by the Dazouri, the sentient native species of Gibbela, who constructed artificial support structures from readily available materials. The twisted stems of the plants produced a spherical fruit that was red in color.

History

Gibbela fruit in stormtrooper helmets

On the remote agricultural planet of Gibbela, situated within the Atrivis sector of the Outer Rim, the native polymorphic species engaged in the cultivation of trees that yielded fruit. Small groups of two to three plants were arranged together, supported by a wooden tripod secured with yellow cord. Surrounding these tripods in concentric circles, the farmers cultivated a short plant that produced a yellow harvest. To safeguard their crops, the farmers employed scarecrows and gathered the red fruits into woven baskets.

The Galactic Empire saw Gibbela as a promising site for colonization, based on initial reconnaissance that suggested the local inhabitants were incapable of mounting a significant resistance. A small Imperial task force landed on the planet, claiming it as Imperial territory in the name of the Galactic Emperor. This audacious act involved landing their Sentinel-class landing craft directly on top of several fruit trees and crop circles. A local farmer retaliated, killing the entire Imperial task force. Following this incident, the abandoned Imperial equipment was repurposed for agricultural use: blaster rifles were used to construct tripod supports, and stormtrooper helmets served as baskets for harvesting fruit.

Behind the scenes

The fruit tree was conceived by Ken Lizzl and Lucas Marangon for the two-page comic, "The Value of Proper Intelligence to Any Successful Military Campaign is Not to Be Underestimated," which was initially featured in Star Wars Tales 19. Initially categorized as S-canon along with all the other volumes, one through twenty, of Star Wars Tales, the comic's status was elevated to C-canon when it was referenced in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, which was released in 2008.
