An Imperial lieutenant served within Moff Kentor Sarne's military during 8 ABY. This individual, holding the rank of commander, oversaw a security detachment assigned to protect the science team known as MS-133. Their mission took them to Aaris III, a planet situated in the Kathol sector of the Outer Rim Territories. The lieutenant also functioned as the pilot of their designated shuttle. While on Aaris III, the lieutenant commanded a small group of soldiers into the planet's dense jungle, prompted by reports of entities "spying" on MS-133. These reports were a consequence of the Plaque of Victory, a non-living lifeform that manipulated the team members, distorting their perceptions and inciting conflict. Tragically, the lieutenant and his team never made it back to base camp; his remains were later discovered in the jungle by other members of the expedition.
During the year 8 ABY, a male lieutenant served under the Imperial warlord Moff Kentor Sarne as a member of his military forces. This soldier and skilled pilot was given command of the security detail for MS-133, a team of scientific researchers tasked with conducting an archaeological dig on the planet Aaris III. Aaris III was once home to a native species that had become extinct thousands of years prior. The team's objective was to excavate the ruins of the civilization's cities and determine the cause of their demise. The lieutenant also served as the shuttle pilot, transporting the team to Aaris III aboard a Curich-class shuttle and landing near a vast field of ruins. Doctor Lancer Brunou, the team leader, suspected that Sarne had instructed the lieutenant to land at a specific location, but he lacked concrete evidence. For several months, the scientific and technical personnel carried out their excavations. Eventually, members of the team unearthed an artifact within a chamber located in the ruins. After removing the artifact from a floor vault, the expedition members began to experience heightened paranoia, feeling as if they were being watched from the surrounding jungle, despite the absence of any apparent signs of other living beings on the planet. In reality, the artifact was a non-living lifeform that sought to destroy those around it by inducing feelings of paranoia and suspicion, ultimately leading to homicidal behavior. The team's experiences were a direct result of the artifact's influence.
After his team members reported seeing "spies" in the jungle, the lieutenant led a group of five soldiers into the dense foliage to investigate. The small team was never seen again at the base camp, although those remaining heard blaster fire in the distance approximately one hour after their departure. That night, the base camp was attacked by the primitive descendants of the native Aaris, who wielded energy weapons, resulting in a small battle. The following morning, the bodies of the lieutenant's team were discovered just inside the jungle's edge. Over the next few days, the artifact's influence and the constant attacks by the Aaris reduced MS-133 to only two survivors: expedition leader Doctor Brunou and a research assistant named Solla Deremot. Both were eventually rescued from the planet by the New Republic CR90 corvette FarStar.
The lieutenant possessed the skills of both a ground force commander and a pilot, demonstrating sufficient aptitude to pilot a Curich-class shuttle. When faced with potential danger, he displayed the courage to lead his men from the front and personally investigate any perceived threat to those under his protection.
This lieutenant was a supporting character introduced in Artifact of Aaris, a roleplaying game adventure featured in The DarkStryder Campaign, published by West End Games in 1995. His role in the adventure is revealed through in-universe documentation taken from Doctor Brunou's journal and the associated out-of-universe game text.
While Artifact of Aaris suggests that the lieutenant and his team, under the influence of the Plaque of Victory, were responsible for the initial attack on the base camp—with evidence including the use of blasters in the attack and the discovery of their bodies near the tree line the next morning—an adventure hook near the end of the scenario reveals that the Aaris are not entirely extinct. The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, published in 2008, confirmed that the team was attacked by the remnants of the Aaris civilization.
