After news spread to the planet Naboo regarding the death of Emperor Palpatine at the Battle of Endor, the indigenous population erupted in jubilation. Some even attempted to force the Galactic Empire to leave the world, though their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.
As part of Palpatine's strategy to solidify his authority and bring independent systems under Imperial dominion, he dispatched a garrison to Naboo, falsely claiming it was to safeguard the planet's valuable plasma energy reserves.

Despite their connection to the Emperor, Naboo's leaders were never entirely willing to fully cooperate with their Imperial overseers, and a quiet resistance against the occupying garrison had been developing for many years.
The Gungans, who experienced marginalization during this time and largely retreated back to their swamplands, also established several resistance cells. However, the Gungans and human resistance fighters primarily operated in secrecy, fearing they lacked the strength to confront the legions stationed on their planet.
When word arrived that Palpatine, along with Darth Vader, had perished aboard the second Death Star, and that the Rebel Alliance had achieved victory against the Imperial fleet, numerous planets seized the opportunity to exploit the confusion and disorder among Imperial forces to free themselves from oppressive rule. The inhabitants of Naboo also took advantage of this situation.
Despite their prior diplomatic approach, the Naboo and the Gungans united once again to expel an oppressive force from their world. Naboo rebels mobilized their N-1 starfighters, while the Gungans provided Militiagung soldiers to invade the capital.
The Theed Royal Palace was stormed, and Rebellion supporters advanced through the palace, even reaching the rooftops. This part of the battle appeared to have caused minimal damage to the palace's exterior, based on its appearance immediately afterward. Following the battle, crowds celebrated in the plaza and on top of buildings, with at least one Gungan using the occasion to proclaim Naboo's liberation. The celebrations were short-lived, however, as the local Imperial garrisons suppressed the uprising.
Despite the setback following the events at Endor, the planet ultimately achieved freedom from Imperial control, and its sector was represented in the New Republic Senate by a Gungan Senator.
The battle, or rather, its aftermath, first appeared in the DVD release of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, in a newly created sequence for the film's conclusion, depicting the galaxy celebrating the death of Emperor Palpatine. While the film suggested that the Empire was successfully driven out, further information from The Essential Atlas and The Essential Guide to Warfare revealed that the Empire had quelled the revolt.
