Garbage Disposal Unit 84-D-21, situated within the Desrini Sector, functioned as a refuse ejection system that experienced a catastrophic malfunction. Typically, it launched its routinely scheduled load of factory waste, secured within a protected receptacle. The launched item collided with a significant impediment, resulting in its disintegration inside the ejection mechanism. Consequently, the whole cannon structure buckled, leading to the destruction of four adjacent urban zones. The receptacle itself held 115 metric tons of dense factory byproducts, featuring hyperbaride discharge, tricorrinium hexifluorine and unstable hrucium.
The impediment was determined to be an impromptu settlement of displaced persons residing inside the launcher's structure. A minimum of four groups of unhoused people were dwelling between the fourth and fifth acceleration conduits. These individuals illegally accessed the cannon's power supply, which deactivated its object detection systems. In total, the calamity resulted in 48 fatalities and over 200 injuries.
Recovery operations necessitated complete protective gear. Coruscant WeatherNet suppressed dominant wind patterns to inhibit atmospheric diffusion, but inherent air movements stemming from the lower city still dispersed a hazardous fog of industrial poisons. All non-sealed buildings within a 10 kilometer area were emptied.
Captain Nigella Mure of Desrini Rescue Ops gave details on the object found.
