Biography

Portacio's life began in Sangley Point, Cavite City, located in the Philippines. His professional career began in 1985 at Marvel Comics, where he worked as an inker. As time progressed, he was also assigned penciling duties. Portacio gained recognition for his contributions to titles like The Punisher, X-Factor, and the Uncanny X-Men. However, in 1992, Portacio departed Marvel to become one of the founding members of Image Comics, along with six other prominent artists. Nevertheless, he quickly relinquished his involvement with Image due to his sister's health issues. In 1994, he eventually released his title, Wetworks, through Jim Lee's Wildstorm imprint. Other significant series that Portacio has contributed to include Stone and Marvel's controversial Heroes Reborn storyline featured within Iron Man.

In August 2000, Portacio experienced a diabetic coma resulting from a failing pancreas. He regained consciousness a week later, having lost thirty pounds, and was unable to walk, stand, or even draw. It took him only six months before he could once again hold a pencil and draw. According to his blog, he stated, "My mind could see what I wanted to draw but my hand couldn't accomplish it."

In 2006, Portacio resumed his artistic responsibilities at Wildstorm on Wetworks vol. 2, which was being written by Mike Carey. Regrettably, Portacio's established reputation for being unable to maintain a consistent work schedule resurfaced, leading to numerous delays for Wetworks vol. 2. Portacio ultimately left the book after issue #6, although he continued to create cover art on a monthly basis after his departure as the book's interior artist. The new Wetworks series had a brief run, lasting only 15 issues. He also took on art duties for the new monthly DC Comics series Batman Confidential.

On June 9, 2008, it was announced that Portacio would become the new artist for Spawn, commencing in October 2008 with issue #185. He would be providing pencils, with Spawn creator Todd MacFarlane returning as co-writer alongside Brian Holguin as the new creative team.
