Wookieepedia:WookieeProject Web

WookieeProject: Web has been created to address the growing demand for assistance with utilizing web-based resources on Wookieepedia. This project stems from several key observations: the amount of web-based material relevant to Wookieepedia is constantly expanding, and effectively cataloging this content is a significant challenge, particularly given the transient nature of the web, where pages and sites can disappear unexpectedly. Furthermore, proper indexing necessitates specific tools, such as templates for citations and archive repositories. All of this calls for increased user expertise, and improved coordination, which has been lacking in the past. This WookieeProject builds upon prior individual and group efforts, like the 2020 archive link project.

WookieeProject: Web aims to establish a collaborative space where users can:

  • Collaboratively index the numerous websites vital to Wookieepedia, including StarWars.com, using a well-defined methodology that allows us to track progress, minimizing redundant work and addressing concerns like "has this already been checked?".
  • Offer assistance with technical problems, by suggesting new ideas, making requests, or sharing technical knowledge and skills.
  • Acquire new skills crucial for project success, such as maximizing the potential of Archive.org.

Unlike most WookieeProjects, our primary emphasis is on "Research & Development," as we strive to improve how Wookieepedia uses web content. However, participants are welcome to enhance articles (authors, web articles, websites) and advocate for their featured status, which the WookieeProject will support with talk page templates and nominations as needed.

Frequently asked question

Is this project truly needed?

While editors have been adding links to articles since Wookieepedia's beginning, this has often been unsystematic and subjective, overlooking entire web pages and topics. The disappearance of websites has further complicated the retrieval of lost information. Therefore, a dedicated group is necessary to ensure comprehensive web content coverage.

What does "indexing" mean?

Indexing is the intellectual process of gathering, listing, and organizing relevant terms (person, character, event, etc.) or documents to facilitate easy information access. On Wookieepedia, it involves populating lists for Appearances and Sources, in simple terms. It is an essential task for encyclopedia creation and should ideally be the first step when encountering a new document.

Why is archiving so vital?

Attribution and verifiability are fundamental principles of Wookieepedia, which we maintain through Sourcing. Without these principles, we could not claim any level of quality or trustworthiness. The web consists of documents crucial to the attribution chain, but link rot, where URLs change or content is deleted, renders these links useless, breaking the attribution chain. The only reliable solution is using web archives: copies of web pages stored on specialized sites like archive.org or archive.today. Without them, we would have lost a great deal of valuable content.
