Yaka, a terrestrial planet within the Yaka system, existed as part of the Northern Dependencies area of the Colonies. It was located in proximity to the Perave system and served as the homeworld for the sentient Yaka species, whose members communicated using the Yakan language.
The scientifically advanced Arkanian species, originating from the planet Arkania in the Perave system's, once achieved dominion over the Yaka system, encompassing the planet Yaka itself. Subsequently, in 490 BBY, the Arkanians conducted a medical experiment that involved the forced implantation of cybernetic brain links into the Yakas, who were regarded by the former as "mindless". As a result, the Yakas evolved into one of the most intellectually advanced species residing in the galaxy. Senior Anthropologist Mammon Hoole eventually referenced the Yakas' homeworld—its name listed as "unknown"—in a species description that was later incorporated into the book The Essential Guide to Alien Species.
The Yaka species' planet of origin was initially documented in the 2001 reference work The Essential Guide to Alien Species authored by Ann Margaret Lewis. The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas, penned by Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry, situated the Yaka system, and consequently the planet, within grid coordinate M-8. Fry has indicated that the star systems detailed in the book's Appendix are named after the most significant planets or celestial objects found within those systems. Therefore, this article recognizes the Yakas' homeworld as being named in accordance with the Yaka system.
