Zox, a recording droid of the X-0X series, was the property of Mandora Catabe while she held the position of editor-in-chief at the HoloNet News located on Coruscant. Following the Imperial military's prohibition on relay droids, Catabe enhanced Zox and subsequently gifted it to Calliope Drouth when she was terminated from her position. In a previously recorded communication, Catabe informed her previous subordinate of her intention to align with the rebellion, proposing that Drouth covertly assist her using Zox. During the Imperial Ball, an event attended by Drouth accompanied by Zox, the droid unexpectedly took flight and ended up in the possession of Director Orson Krennic, who was also present. Thanks to data gathered by Drouth at the ball and recorded by Zox, numerous anti-Imperial groups became aware of Jedha's significance to the Empire, including the Partisans led by Saw Gerrera, who had already initiated an insurgency on the planet.
