AX-456

AX-456 existed as an asteroid situated within the Barma sector.

History

Scouting parties, along with droids, had thoroughly surveyed the AX system millennia prior to the Battle of Yavin. However, during the era of the Republic, it remained barren and without any exploitable resources. It was during the time of the Empire and the Civil War that the Rebellion realized the system's strategic importance. Its location was close to both the sector capital of Dakshee, and the sector's border with Haldeen and the Kliap sectors, making it an ideal spot for a clandestine relay station to transmit information to the capital and other Rebel outposts.

Intelligence reports suggested its function was to disseminate intelligence and engage in psyprop activities. However, AX-456 actually served as a hub for distributing information, accounts, and reports of the Empire's brutalities, revealing the truth to Imperial citizens and garnering sympathy and backing for the Rebel cause.

In 1 BBY, the Rebels commenced construction of the base, with the majority of the facilities and personnel located underground. Before the construction was complete, Imperial probe droids detected the activity. Two weeks later, the installations were fully operational.

The Imperial stormtroopers, under the command of Kyle Katarn, obliterated the comm center. It was here that Katarn, then a cadet, encountered Jan Ors for the first time and made the decision to spare her life. The battle resulted in the deaths of four hundred and thirty-six Rebels, and all but six members of a stormtrooper platoon. Despite the significant losses suffered by Katarn's forces and his own serious injuries, he emerged victorious and was hailed as an Imperial hero. During his graduation ceremony at the Imperial Military Academy at Cliffside, Jerec awarded Katarn the Medal of Valor in recognition of his actions during the Battle of AX-456.

Base structure

The surface area featured a comm dish and a landing area, while the majority of the base was located beneath the surface. Due to the rapid construction, the installations exhibited a crude and improvised appearance.

The base's entrance consisted of a standard prefab structure, box-shaped and robustly built to withstand impacts from meteorites. The door was embedded in fast-drying permacrete, and unlocked by a number pad. A visible camera was positioned next to it, along with a concealed pinhead lens. The metallic door opened into a pair of airlocks, with the second serving as a backup in case the first was destroyed by a meteor. Beyond the airlocks, a corridor, excavated by a mole miner, led to other passageways. This functional corridor, adorned with electronic message boards, printouts, and equipment racks, branched off to a cafeteria, cavelike storage rooms, and a door leading to the Comm Room, which was filled with monitors and related equipment.

In addition to personnel, the corridors housed various droids and machinery, including crawlers, heavy-duty construction droids, spidery freight loaders, A-types, and R2 units.
