The Anaxes War College System was a system used to classify various types of starships in the galaxy, and was used by the Galactic Republic, the Galactic Empire, and the First Order. First instituted by the Anaxes War College during the Clone Wars, the Anaxes System served to expand the existing nomenclature used to classify capital ships by adding battlecruisers, destroyers, and dreadnoughts. According to this system, ships were divided into seven main classifications; these were corvettes (100-200 meters), frigates (200-400 meters), cruisers (400-600 meters), heavy cruisers (600-1,200 meters), destroyers (1,000-2,000 meters), battlecruisers (2,000-5,000 meters), and dreadnoughts (+5,000 meters). These classifications were flexible, however, and some ships could be moved to a higher or lower class depending on their total firepower and function.
The Anaxes War College classification system was first developed by author Jason Fry in the Star Wars Legends continuity, as part of Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Incredible Vehicles reference book, and was later included in The Essential Guide to Warfare. It entered canon as part of Star Wars: Battles that Changed the Galaxy, also written by Fry.
