Battle droid 513 was one of many monster battle droids assembled by the Mandalorians of Death Watch for target practice during their stay on the planet Carlac in the midst of the Clone Wars. Death Watch cobbled their training droids together from droid parts of various models, including many originating from the Confederacy of Independent Systems' Droid Army. Battle droid 513 specifically was composed of the body of an LR-57 combat/retail droid, the right arm of a B1-series battle droid and a leg from a LM-432 crab droid.
Death Watch would continually reuse 513 alongside numerous other droids for target practice until the arrival of Jedi Padawan, Ahsoka Tano and her R2-series astromech droid, R2-D2, the latter of which would convince 513 and its fellow droids to rebel against their masters, resulting in a firefight during which 513 was destroyed by Bo-Katan Kryze while its compatriots fled off planet.
Having been reassembled from the remains of Confederate battle droids, 513 was solely designed by the radical Mandalorian terrorist organization, Death Watch to act as a form of target practice for its members during the Clone Wars.
While stationed at a Death Watch camp on the Outer Rim planet of Carlac, one of Death Watch's airborne troopers used 513 for target practice. As 513 walked by him, this airborne trooper fired his wrist rocket at the droid, blasting 513 in its side and inflicting critical damage to the droid. In response, 513 would collapse to the ground while crying out in agony as the trooper that shot him laughed at the droid's awareness. Later that night, while the leader of Death Watch, Pre Vizsla, was meeting with the former Separatist Lux Bonteri and Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano, 513 would encounter his eventual savior, an R2 series astromech droid identified as R2-D2, who had been ordered by a pair of airborne troopers to repair their droids so they could be used for target practice again. Acknowledging the droid's orders, 513 and the other droids began to surround R2, begging to be reassembled by the astromech.
Proceeding to repair each one of the droids, 513 expressed his gratitude to the astromech, asking if there was anything the droids could do for R2 in return. By this time, Ahsoka and Bonteri had witnessed the Death Watch launch an unprovoked attack on the native people of Carlac, protesting the Mandalorian's slaughter and as a result were taken hostage and sentenced to be executed. Witnessing Death Watch return with his companions in captivity, R2 asked for 513's aid in rescuing his friends which 513 questioned how such an attempt could be made. R2 explained his plan and in response 513 rallied the other droids to their cause. By the time R2's rescue attempt was put into action, 513 had gathered the Death Watch's droids to aid their newfound companion, sparking a brief battle against Death Watch and creating a sufficient diversion to allow R2 and his companions to escape the Death Watch aboard a landspeeder. As the battle continued, 513 was mounted by Pre Vizsla's lieutenant, Bo-Katan Kryze, who destroyed the droid with several direct shots to its head before pursuing the escaping prisoners.
Later on in the Clone Wars, a sales bill in Pons Ora, a settlement located on the Outer Rim planet Abafar, advertised the sale of 513.
Originally a standard LR-57 combat/retail droid, 513 had lost both its right arm and right leg, which his Mandalorian masters had replaced with that of a B1-series battle droid and LM-432 crab droid, respectively. 513 also had a deep-toned vocabulator, in which it could speak in Galactic Basic, and was capable of shooting blue ion blasts from his arm-mounted double laser cannon. 513's service under Death Watch soon gave the droid a developed personality, able to understand the horrors of being destroyed and rebuilt for target practice, presumably indicating that 513 had been destroyed and rebuilt several times while serving Death Watch, causing it to plead to be reassembled after encountering R2-D2. This unique personality was later showcased further as 513 was quickly convinced by R2 into attacking Death Watch to save Ahsoka Tano and Lux Bonteri after R2 successfully reassembled it, causing a diversion long enough to allow R2 to escape Carlac with his companions, even at the cost of 513's own destruction.
