The black current of the Force was one of the equal and balanced parts of the Force, of which all worlds were made. Its contrasting counterpart was the white flare of the Force. The black current coursed and flowed through beings who were Force-sensitive. It provided subtle guidance and was useful for precise manipulation, but its waves could also be powerful and destructive.
With a tide or a churning pool of black current, a Force-sensitive could buoy objects or beings against gravity. Feelings and presence could be obscured in part or entirely. By submerging another's mind in the current, memory and intent could be rerouted; for instance, a crowd of panicking individuals could be redirected towards safety, but emotional expressions could be cooled to the point of not feeling them.
The black current of the Force was first depicted in "The Duel," a short film in the Star Wars: Visions series produced by Kamikaze Douga and directed by Takanobu Mizuno, and first identified in the tie-in novel Ronin: A Visions Novel, written by Emma Mieko Candon. Candon drew upon the concepts of Taoism and yin/yang as part of re-envisioning the Force as closer to its Japanese cultural inspirations instead of a dark and light side. The black current is not equivalent to the light or the dark side, instead having its own characteristics.
