The flame troopers represented a distinct specialization within the clone trooper ranks, focusing on the deployment of incendiary weaponry, notably the BT X-42 heavy Republic flamethrower. These troopers were equipped with specialized armor engineered to withstand the extreme heat conditions they frequently encountered. Their participation is documented during the Second Battle of Geonosis. Later, the Imperial incinerator stormtroopers emerged as their successors.
During the events of the Second Battle of Geonosis, a squadron of gunships was led by Jedi General Ki-Adi-Mundi and special ops clone trooper Commander Jet, transporting a contingent of special ops troopers along with flame troopers, with the objective of securing a landing zone. The Geonosian defense forces managed to shoot down the squadron carrying Mundi and the clones, precipitating a crash that inflicted significant losses. Subsequently, the clones engaged the Geonosians within one of the caves serving as a Geonosian stronghold. Nearing a breakthrough against the Geonosian defensive fire, Mundi called upon the flame troopers to incinerate the remaining Geonosian forces, thereby enabling Republic forces to advance and provide support to Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi at the designated landing area.
