Coronation of Queen Amidala

The formal investiture of Padmé Naberrie, also known as Princess of Theed, into the position of Queen of Naboo was the coronation of Padmé Amidala. This event, which included her being formally crowned, took place the morning following the resignation of King Veruna in the year 33 BBY. Notable Nabooian politicians, such as Governor Sio Bibble and Senator Palpatine, were present. She took the regnal name Amidala.

Background

Unbeknownst to Padmé Naberrie, Senator Palpatine, who was secretly the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, had secretly orchestrated her rise to power. He accomplished this by suggesting to her parents that she should compete for the Naboo throne. Prime Councilor Kun Lago believed that Naberrie was responsible for the public disclosure of a Foreign Affairs scandal. She swiftly garnered popular support to become the next monarch. Following the abdication of the unpopular king, preparations for Naberrie's coronation were quickly made.

History

In 33 BBY, which was a year, Ars Veruna, who was the King of the Human people inhabiting Naboo, stepped down from his position. Padmé Naberrie, the thirteen-year-old Princess of Theed who went by the state name Amidala, was chosen as his successor. Because the former king's abdication had been known for several hours before it was officially announced, Naberrie's coronation was meticulously planned in advance. Sio Bibble, the planet's Governor and the leader of the Naboo Royal Advisory Council, oversaw the grooming of the Princess of Theed with the assistance of a group of royal handmaidens. While the palace staff was busy getting ready for the event, Amidala's young boyfriend Ian Lago showed up and told her that he loved her. However, Amidala told him that their relationship had to end so she could dedicate her life to the people of Naboo.

Amidala sat in the throne room of the Theed Royal Palace on the day of the ceremony, facing away from the large window. She wore a bright-red robe with wide shoulders, gold embroidery, a potolli fur hem, and many illuminated sein jewels. She also had the traditional makeup worn by Naboo queens: white face paint, the red scar of remembrance, and two stylized beauty marks. Then, one of the handmaidens placed the crown—which was actually an elaborate wig with a gold face frame and the valuable Jewel of Zenda—on Amidala's head as she sat. The new Queen then gave an official acceptance speech that she had been writing the day before with the help of Bibble, her chief advisor. Following her coronation, Captain Quarsh Panaka explained to her the long-standing practice of using decoys as a safety measure. It was at this time that Queen Amidala first encountered Senator Palpatine, who was the representative for Naboo and the thirty-five other related worlds in the Chommell sector.

Behind the scenes

Sketch of Amidala's coronation by Randy Martinez

The first mention of Amidala's coronation was in "A Summer's Dream," a short comic that came out in 2000 in the fifth issue of the Star Wars Tales comic series. However, the only picture of the ceremony was created by Star Wars artist Randy Martinez for the 2010 Topps trading card set 2010 Topps Star Wars Galaxy Series 5. Martinez had wanted to create that scene for years, ever since he visited Caserta Palace in Italy in 2005, which was used to film the interior scenes of the Naboo Royal Palace for Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. The novel Darth Plagueis also revealed that Palpatine and Plagueis were involved in Amidala's coronation.

There are a few important differences between Martinez's first sketch and the trading card. Amidala and her handmaidens were alone in the sketch, but Palpatine and Sio Bibble were added to the background of the final product. Also, the dress that Amidala wore in the sketch was not the same as her "Throne Room Robe" from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and the crown was placed on her head piece by piece.
