Engira

Engira was an Outer Rim Territories gas giant located in the Jospro sector. The site of a pirate base that was destroyed more than thirty years before the Battle of Yavin, by the time of the Galactic Civil War the planet had become a supply convoy colony of the Galactic Empire. An ambush near Engira once led to the loss of three Imperial freighters transporting food and ammunition.

Description

Engira was a gas giant–type planet located in the Engira system, a part of the Jospro sector within the Slice portion of the Outer Rim Territories. It had clouds that formed bands of red, orange, and white coloration.

History

At some point between 39 BBY and 34 BBY, Corporate Alliance forces under the command of the Harch military leader Trench destroyed a pirate base at Engira. After the establishment of the Galactic Empire, Engira came to serve as an Imperial supply colony, from which convoys transported supplies to Imperial garrisons and other facilities throughout the galaxy.

As a result, Engira became a prime target for pirates, and during the early Galactic Civil War, forces affiliated with the Rebel Alliance ambushed a replenishment convoy near Engira. The loss of the convoy's three freighters, which had been carrying several hundred metric tons of foodstuffs and ammunition valued at 18.2 million credits, was among several incidents later mentioned by the Imperial Commission on the Conduct of the War in the report "Effectiveness of Standard Escort and Patrol Tactics Against Enemy Interdiction," with the commission recommending that the Imperial Navy adopt the usage of escort frigates for the protection of the Empire's convoys.

Behind the scenes

Engira was introduced in The Star Wars Sourcebook.

Engira was introduced in The Star Wars Sourcebook.

Engira was first mentioned in The Star Wars Sourcebook, a 1987 supplement for West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game authored by Bill Slavicsek and Curtis Smith. "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, How I Wonder Where We Are," a 1990 roleplaying game source article published in Voyages SF 13, placed Engira in the Mahrusha sector. Since that article was released outside of the Lucas Licensing process, its canonicity within the Star Wars Legends continuity was never confirmed.

The planet's first full appearance came in the 1998 video game Star Wars: Rebellion, which instead placed Engira in the Jospro sector and also provided the planet's only visual depiction—an image also used to illustrate three other worlds in the game. The game's accompanying Prima Games strategy guide misspelled Engira's name as "Enigra." The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas subsequently placed the Engira system, and therefore Engira itself, in grid square R-7, and the later StarWars.com Online Companion to the book ultimately confirmed Star Wars: Rebellions placement of the system and the planet.
