Centuries before the supposed exile of Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo from the Ascendancy, the Ufsa family had brought the Junkyard's asteroids together to facilitate mining. The Gem was a region of the Junkyard that was originally the most mineralogically rich. By the time of Thrawn's exile, the Junkyard's mining resources had largely been depleted, particularly in the Gem, though occasional rumors of new mineral veins proliferated in the Ascendancy.
Not long after the Hoxim incident, at least six Grysk warships under the command of "Jixtus" were hired by Patriarch Clarr'ivl'exow "Rivlex" of the Clarr family. They were stationed in low-power mode in the Junkyard, where spies of the Stybla family discovered them. The Stybla Patriel of Rhigar, the main planet of the Rhigal system, sent the Orisson coordinates of the Junkyard, where Captain Clarr'os'culry "Roscu" encountered the Grysk ships, reminiscent of the Battle Dreadnought that the Chiss heavy cruiser Grayshrike had encountered over Sunrise.
The Junkyard first appeared in the 2021 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Lesser Evil, written by Timothy Zahn as the final novel of Star Wars: The Ascendancy Trilogy.
