The Battle of Tandankin, alternatively referred to as the Tandankin mission, occurred in the weeks following the Battle of Endor and immediately after Grand Moff Nivers declared Tandankin to be Imperial territory.
While Grand Moff Nivers was aboard a Star Destroyer patrolling the system, he was caught off guard by the sudden arrival of Rogue Squadron's X-wings, which appeared with lasers firing. They had somehow bypassed Nivers's Star Destroyer. Nivers's stormtroopers rushed to reach an Imperial AT-AT that Nivers had brought primarily to intimidate and control the Tandankinians, but many were easily shot down by the Rogues.

However, a fortunate stormtrooper managed to shoot down Red Seven with his laser rifle. The trooper's good fortune was short-lived, as he was struck and killed by a blaster shot from Wedge Antilles's X-wing. The downed pilot managed to make a safe crash landing on a nearby hill. From this vantage point, he spotted an Imperial landing strip where one hundred TIE Fighters were being readied for combat. Realizing that Rogue Squadron could not handle such a large number of TIE Fighters, Antilles, after being informed by the downed pilot, launched torpedoes at a very tall tower next to the landing strip, causing it to fall and crush the majority of the TIE Fighters.

Soon after, Nivers and his forces surrendered, and Tandankin was liberated. However, the Tandankinians were greatly displeased with Antilles and the squadron because the destroyed tower was a monument of great cultural significance to them. The locals were prepared to execute Antilles, but one of the Rebel pilots, still wearing his helmet, recounted Antilles's heroic actions during the Galactic Civil War and explained that destroying the tower was necessary to secure their freedom.
The locals then understood the pilot's point, apologized to Antilles, and celebrated him as their planet's liberator. When a child inquired about the pilot's identity, he removed his helmet, revealing himself to be Luke Skywalker, one of the Rebellion's most celebrated heroes.
