Rentor was a terrestrial planet in the Unknown Regions, located within the backwater areas of the Chiss Ascendancy nation. The planet was neither a political nor cultural hub of the Chiss species despite its proximity to the Ascendancy's capital planet Csilla. Rentor was home to a branch of the Ascendancy's Kivu family, including Kivu'raw'nuru, core name "Vurawn," and his sister Kivu'rik'ardok, "Vurika."
Rentor was a terrestrial planet that was located in the Unknown Regions' Chiss Ascendancy nation and had an atmosphere that was breathable for the Chiss species. While it was located close to the Ascendancy's capital planet Csilla, Rentor was considered to be in the nation's backwater regions and was neither a political nor cultural hub.
Around 4300 BBY, following a cataclysm that rendered most of Csilla's surface uninhabitable, the residents of the planet moved from the capital to other neighboring planets in the Ascendancy, including Rentor. In 56 BBY a member of the minor Kivu family, Kivu'rik'ardok—core name "Vurika"—was deemed eligible to become a sky-walker navigator and left her family and Rentor to join the sky-walker corps.
Around 39 BBY, the ruling Mitth family had a small presence on Rentor, including a compound. Mitth family Syndic Mitth'urf'ianico "Thurfian" traveled to the planet around that year at the behest of Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet General Ba'kif to meet with the Rentor native Kivu'raw'nuru "Vurawn"—Vurika's brother who was a student at a local academy. Ba'kif believed Vurawn would be a good fit to join the Mitth via rematching and eventually take up military service. After meeting with Vurawn, Thurfian took the young man to the Mitth family compound to meet with the Patriel, who handled Mitth family affairs on Rentor. En route, however, Thurfian was informed that the interviews with the family officials had been superseded and that Vurawn had officially been rematched to the Mitth—adopting the name Mitth'raw'nuru "Thrawn."
In 18 BBY, the Ascendancy's Boadil and Irizi families worked on a defense platform on Rentor. In the same year, during a crisis in the Ascendancy that nearly led to a civil war, starships of the Clarr family were attacked by vessels of the warlike Grysk species at the Chiss world of Jamiron. Thurfian, who had by that time become the Patriarch of the Mitth, informed Irizi Syndic Irizi'stal'mustro "Zistalmu" that he had two patrol ships stationed at Rentor, as well as a light cruiser, that could be sent to assist. However, the Irizi syndic declined the offer, remarking that the vessels would not get to Jamiron in time.
An academy was located on the planet that Vurawn attended around 39 BBY. By that year, a compound of the Mitth family could also be found on Rentor.
In the current Star Wars canon, Rentor first appeared in flashback scenes of Timothy Zahn's 2020 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising, the first volume of the The Ascendancy Trilogy. It was first pictured on a map that was provided by publisher Del Rey as a bonus for pre-ordering the November 16, 2021 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Lesser Evil, the final installment of the trilogy.
The reference book Star Wars Year By Year: A Visual History, New Edition, authored by Pablo Hidalgo and Kristin Baver and released on November 2, 2021, states that Rentor is "imperiled" in Zahn's 2019 novel Thrawn: Treason, although the planet is in fact not featured in the latter book at all. In the Star Wars Legends continuity, Rentor was introduced in the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas, authored by Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry.
