Thule was an arid mountainous planet within the in the Esstran sector of the Outer Rim Territories. The planet shared its name with a mercenary gang known as Thugs of Thule.
Millennia prior to the Clone Wars, Thule was ruled by the ancient Sith. The planet contained Sith ruins and artifacts, including a large temple.
Thule was a planet occupied by the Separatist Alliance during the Clone Wars to develop a Separatist droid factory. The Jedi Council sent Jedi Knights Iskat Akaris and Tualon Yaluna, as well as Jedi General Josk Nivar and a company of clone troopers led by Captain Spider on a mission to destroy said factory after getting the intel on where other droid factories were throughout the galaxy itself. During the trek, Iskat was in awe of a crystal from the Sith temple on the planet, but secretly pocketed it to avoid suspicion from Nivar.
Doctor Chelli Lona Aphra owned a certificate from the Imperial Institute for Archaeological Exploitation that gave her limited clearance to access Thule, a site of historical importance to the Galactic Empire, according to bylaws 22.750-23.018 of the Harvester Accords.
Thule was introduced in the current Star Wars canon via mention of the Thugs of Thule in the 2016 reference book Star Wars: Complete Locations. They were part of material reprinted from the 2003 reference book Inside the Worlds of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, which was written by Simon Beecroft and Curtis Saxton, illustrated by Richard Chasemore and Hans Jenssen. It was subsequently identified as a distinct location by the 2018 reference book Star Wars: Smuggler's Guide, written by Daniel Wallace. It first appeared as a planet in the 2023 novel Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade, written by Delilah S. Dawson.
In the Star Wars Legends continuity, Thule was first mentioned in the short story "Bane of the Sith," written by Kevin J. Anderson and published as a part of Star Wars Gamer 3 in 2001.
