The Vex Asteroid Belt, also referred to simply as the Belt, was located in the Vex system and lay within the Inner Moddell systems area of the Moddell sector, one of the subsectors making up the Inner Zuma Region within the Outer Rim Territories' Zuma sector. Along with the rest of the Vex system, the asteroid belt was linked by hyperlanes to the Vasha system as well as the Firrerre system in the Sugai sector. The Vex Asteroid Belt consisted of tumbling, barren asteroids with various gravitic pull.
The Vex Asteroid Belt was originally settled with the purpose of exploring the nearby Monsua Nebula. During the reign of the New Republic, the Belt's kiriswing joints and cantinas were patroned by the decorated yet eccentric Nova Scout Ecclesis von der Agar. He often recruited new arrivals to the Belt as apprentice scouts but frequently brought trouble for them. It was also rumored that one of the two valuable sculptures known as the Tessents could be found floating among the Belt's asteroids.
The Vex system's asteroid belt was home to a population of three thousand Humans, who were collectively known as Belters. They had no over-arching government, imported foodstuffs and technology from elsewhere and primarily consisted of quarreling freighter jocks, scouts, and prospectors. The scouts in the Vex Asteroid Belt mostly operated independently, although the New Republic Survey Corps also maintained a small outpost on the belt's largest asteroid.
A sufficient amount of credits allowed visitors to the Belt to sell illegal cargo, hide a starship or a fugitive, or strike other shady deals. The Belters asked few questions about the legality of such agreements, and were not interested at all in the dealings of the inhabitants of the nearby fisherman's planet Vex Major, whom they derogatorily referred to as "mudballers."
The Vex Asteroid Belt hosted hyperspace scout bases and a total of twelve spaceports: two standard-class and ten of limited services.
The Vex Asteroid Belt was introduced in the ninth issue of the Star Wars Gamer magazine on February 22, 2002. Within the magazine, the asteroid belt was mentioned in the article "Endor and the Moddell Sector" as well as the Wizards of the Coast's Star Wars Roleplaying Game adventure "Race for the Tessent." The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas placed the Vex Asteroid Belt in grid square H-16.
